N200m needed to prepare 99 Nigerian athletes for the World University Games scheduled

Two hundred million naira is needed to prepare 99 Nigerian athletes for the World University Games scheduled to hold at Gwangju, South Korea from 3rd to 14th of July 2015.

The President of the Nigerian University Games (NUGA), Professor Stephen Hamafyelto, revealed this while addressing sports journalist during the trials for the biennial games at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Sports Complex, Zaria.

Ninety-nine (99) out of the 134 athletes that participated in the trials qualified to represent Nigeria at the Federation International Students Universiade (FISU) Games.

Hamafyelto, who said Nigeria has missed out of recent FISU Games due to poor funding, appealed to the federal government and corporations for support.

“The 28th World University Games will hold in Gwangju, South Korea from July 3-14, 2015 and hopefully Nigerian students will be part of over 10,000 participants that will come from over 180 countries across the globe," Hamafyelto said.

“NUGA and security agencies are the major suppliers of talents for the Nigerian national teams. "There is therefore need for the Federal government to ensure that the nation takes its place among the 180 countries expected at the Students’ Olympics."

According to him, the 99 athletes will feature in five sporting events: athletics, taekwondo, judo, badminton and table tennis "Of the 134 students screened, 99 scaled through consisting of 18 for athletics, 12 for badminton, 24 for judo, 38 for taekwondo and 7 for table tennis,” he explained.
